Welcome to the
Koben Hofmeyr 7’s-week official website
WHO WE ARE
Our sports tournament, taking place from September 12-15, 2024, in Warmbad (Bela Bela, South Africa), features competitions in hockey, netball, and rugby sevens, with plans to expand to seven school sports in the future.
The Koben Hofmeyr 7’s-week was founded in response to a tragic incident on May 19, 2018, when Koben Hofmeyr suffered a severe spinal cord injury during a rugby match at Hoërskool Warmbad. The delay in receiving critical medical care resulted in permanent paralysis, highlighting the urgent need for immediate medical intervention in school sports.
Catastrophic sports injuries, particularly spinal cord and cerebral injuries, are a grave concern in both South Africa and globally. These injuries often result in life-altering consequences, including permanent paralysis and severe neurological impairments. Annually, thousands of young athletes suffer from such injuries during school sports activities, highlighting the urgent need for effective prevention and rapid medical response.

Understanding Catastrophic Sports Injuries
Catastrophic sports injuries refer to severe injuries that result in long-term or permanent disability. The most common types of these injuries include spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The statistics are alarming: globally, it is estimated that sports-related spinal cord injuries affect over 170,000 people each year, while TBIs account for numerous fatalities and long-term disabilities.
The Koben Hofmeyr 7’s-week Initiative
The Koben Hofmeyr 7’s-week was established to address this critical need for timely medical intervention. By generating funds, the initiative aims to create an emergency fund for schools ensuring that any learner who suffers a serious injury during school sports can receive immediate medical attention. This includes transportation via helicopter or ambulance to the nearest well-equipped medical facility and financial assistance for medical costs.
The Golden Hours: Preventing Severe Consequences
Immediate medical intervention within the first six hours post-injury, known as the “Golden Hours,” is crucial in mitigating the severity of catastrophic injuries. Rapid response, including the availability of suitable transport and access to medical specialists, significantly improves the outcomes for injured athletes. The delay in receiving appropriate medical care can result in irreversible damage, as evidenced by Koben Hofmeyr’s own experience.
Collaborating for Better Outcomes
Our initiative also fosters collaboration with pharmaceutical institutions to provide expert evaluations and treatment plans. This comprehensive approach is not limited to rugby but extends across all school sports for both boys and girls. Our primary goal is to prevent other children and their families from enduring similar trauma by ensuring prompt and efficient responses to serious sports injuries.
Ensuring Medical Insurance Coverage
Understanding the importance of medical insurance in managing catastrophic sports injuries, our initiative advocates for comprehensive coverage for all student-athletes. Adequate insurance ensures that families are not burdened with exorbitant medical costs, and injured athletes receive the best possible care without delay. Join us in our mission to improve the safety and well-being of young athletes. Through the Koben Hofmeyr 7’s-week, we strive to make a lasting impact by preventing catastrophic sports injuries and providing the necessary support when they occur.
